Back To My Roots.

It started with a casual craving for pancakes on a Sunday morning. The skies were the most glorious shade of blue and the first subtle crisp of Fall was finally in the air. It was a day with no plans in place-- a day that yearned for a bit of adventure-- and as our minds drifted back towards our grumbling stomachs, I realized I knew just the spot to go. We hopped in the car and set our sights towards the Tappan Zee.

It had been almost six years since I had last walked that main drag of my hometown. And as we stood on the sidewalk, patiently awaiting our name to be called at the famed local joint downtown, an unexpected jumble of nostalgia was slowly coursing its way through me. In those six years, a lot had changed-- I had changed. And yet, standing there on that Sunday morning, so much felt just the same as it always had. Just up the street, those beautiful old oak trees still draped over the town square, casting shade and dropping acorns on those passing by. And as the clock struck twelve, the sound of a bell from the nearby church began to toll in a familiar pattern that I didn't realize I remembered until I heard myself humming along.

As we spent the afternoon meandering through old neighborhoods and past old haunts, soaking up every bit of that beautiful Fall day, the memories of a childhood past grew stronger with each step. It was a walk down memory lane in its truest and most honest form. And while the cracks in the sidewalk were a bit longer than I last remembered and the trees a bit older and worn, those same strong reminders of a childhood well nurtured still remained-- the view of the city skyline from my favorite perch above town, the unique weave and twist of the road from one neighborhood to the next, and the taste of those monstrously large "single" scoops from Van Dyk's that will forever carry the blue ribbon in my heart.

I was home. And it had never felt so good.

Weekend In Review.

It was an absolutely perfect Labor Day weekend up here in New York-- cloudless blue skies & abundant sunshine, three days of watching incredible tennis with my parents who were in town for our annual trek out to Queens for the Open, a lazy Monday spent catching up with good friends over delicious food (see below fruit, yogurt & museli combo from Peels!) and hours of aimlessly wandering around the city & some spare time in the kitchen working to clean out my fridge of last week's CSA goodness with an "everything-but-the-kitchen-sink" pizza for the week. All in all, life was pretty darn sweet.

Hard to fathom today is already Wednesday... whew.
Happy Hump Day, all.

Weekend Snapshots.

Holy moly. What a beautiful weekend we had here in the city-- bright blue, cloudless skies and endless amounts of strong, warm light to bask in. It was was one of those incredible, sunshine-filled weekends that reminds you of all the many reasons you've anxiously awaited summer's arrival. And boy did it feel good to soak up every last drop.

While a good portion of Sunday was spent lounging on my patio-- fresh squeezed lemonade in hand and a book I've been itching to get into draped across my lap-- Saturday proved to be its own unexpected adventure. After finishing an errand all the way up on 96th St. circa 11am, I realized with a free afternoon ahead of me there was no reason not to enjoy the sunshine and take a long walk home. So, walk I did. Well, 11 1/2 miles, 3 local farmer's markets, 8 playlist shuffles on the iPod, a (not so) quick tour through Chelsea Market, and a highly unfortunate (but not so surprising) sunburn later, I crossed back into Brooklyn already craving another free afternoon to do it all over again. Well, perhaps minus the sunburn next time.

God, I love this city.

How about you, friends? Hoping you had just as much luck with the weather as we did over in these parts. Here's to a wonderful week ahead.

Weekend Snapshots.

Happy Monday, friends! Boy has it been a long and busy day around here; sorry for not being able to pop on by until so late. After a hectic day at work, I came home from the grocery store tonight feeling inspired to throw on the rubber gloves, put iTunes on shuffle in the corner, and just get life in order a bit. Two loads of laundry, a sink clear of dishes, a freshly bleached bathtub & an apartment of scrubbed floors later, the clock had gone on ahead and struck 11PM. Shew. Let's see how long I can make this productive streak last this week, shall we? :)

In any case, before today gets away from me, I wanted to quickly stop by and be sure to share a few quick snapshots from what was a truly wonderful weekend around these parts:

1&2 -- A Saturday spent taking in the sights and smells of my all-time favorite food market. While there wasn't a stitch of room in my belly for any of those delicious pies, I can certainly attest to every single bit of deliciousness cooked into that Mexican Cemita. (One of these days I swear I'll go to Smorgasburg and actually find it in me try something other than that delicious sandwich... well, maybe.)
3&4 -- A few shots from our stroll through the first series of Williamsburg Walks. Nothing like a giant, street-size scrabble board and a few patches of sod laid out before a bluegrass band to kick off the summer street fair season, eh?
5 -- The first of many summer "AK Cakes", as a dear friend family has dubbed this delicious dessert. (In short, a giant baked sugar cookie spread thin across a baking sheet and topped with some whipped cream & lots of fresh fruit.) It's a no fail, summer go-to that will leave you all nibbling 'till the very last crumbs are gone. But really.
6 -- A simple, yet fresh & totally scrumptious brunch from Goat Town, a fairly new discovery that is slowly, but surely making its way to the top of my list of regular stops.
7 -- My newest possession (read: obsession)! Oh summer sales, how I love you so. (But really, can you blame me?)
8 -- A peek at the reason my apartment was left smelling like a little slice of heaven on Sunday night. As my good friend kindly reminded me on Sunday, while poking around my freezer for some ice, "Umm, Liz? You are aware that you've got an absurdly large bunch of super over-ripe bananas just chillin' in here, right?" Yes. Yes, I was. And a big thank you to Pinch of Yum for helping me do something about that right quick. (Three bananas down, three to go. Who wants my next loaf?)

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead!

Happy Weekend.

I woke up this morning to find something deep down inside of me craving wide, open spaces to explore and tall, towering mountains to climb. As I cracked some eggs into the pan, it dawned on my just how long it's been since I last tugged on a pair of thick woolen socks and laced up those hiking boots of mine. I was yearning for the great outdoors. For adventure.

I miss that feeling of crisp, fresh air filling my lungs while the rhythmic crunch of the dirt trail beneath my boots keeps me moving forward. I miss the satisfaction of escaping from civilization for a good long while and enjoying an unrefined piece of the earth in all of its wild and untamed beauty. And I miss the landscapes of Utah, of Alaska, and of Wyoming-- and all of the many ways in which they are special and unique.

Oh. Be still, my heart.

But it's Friday, and I've got a wonderful weekend to look forward to here in the city-- and what a treat that most certainly is. As for those mountains of mine, I suppose for now I'll have to vicariously live through the photos above and hope that somewhere down the road, there's soon to be a plane ticket & trail head with my name on it. Until then, fingers crossed for an urban adventure to be discovered here in my neck of the Brooklyn woods.

Till Monday, friends.

Weekend Snapshots.

We were gifted an absolutely beautiful weekend here in the city. While the unexpected crisp air and strong rays of sun were strangely reminiscent to the early days of Fall, I have to admit my heart skipped a beat when I suddenly realized that reaching into the back of my closet to pull out those cowboy boots of mine was actually fair game. Love when this crazy weather pattern seems to fall in my favor!

While the majority of my day was unfortunately swallowed whole with errands, somewhere between the purchase of a 10-pack of mini toothpaste tubes and a stop at the market to replenish my stock of granola on Saturday (Game on, travel schedule. Game on.) I found myself near the Promenade with a bit of time to spare. A stop by my favorite neighborhood cafe, an avocado sandwich & a tall, cold glass of cider later, it really started to feel like a Saturday. Here are a few snapshots from my little detour--

Thank goodness for those moments of easy calm & quiet.
Oh weekends, how I love you so.

Happy Weekend.

If there's one thing I'm looking forward to this weekend, friends, it's being here. Being home. April came and went in a whirlwind fury and just one quick look at my schedule for the month of May shows much of the same crazed amount of travel. It's going to be a hectic couple of weeks ahead-- jam-packed with a whole host of wonderful things, no doubt-- but knowing that I have two days ahead of me to spend amidst the familiar, indulging in some favorites, and enjoying the little creature comforts of my world here in Brooklyn warms my heart to no end.

Wishing you & yours a wonderful weekend ahead.

Scenes from the Weekend.

Just a few photos from my wonderful weekend spent at home here in New York. It's been far too long since I've found myself with a full weekend to get out & explore, and Saturday's endless sunshine & cloudless skies provided just the opportunity to do so. Gosh, I've missed this city.

1 & 2 -- A stop off at Smorgasburg in the morning with a dear friend led to some 3's Company Triple Berry Jam from Anarchy In A Jar and a mouth-watering, taste bud bursting Cemita from Cemita's Mexican Sandwiches and Tacos
3 -- A look over the East River.
4 -- A quick trip to Fish's Eddy.
5 & 6 -- Some greenery and blooms at the Union Square Market.

P.S. If you couldn't tell, I finally bit the bullet and jumped on the Instagram bandwagon. I hate to admit it, but I feel a strong addiction coming on. Feel free to follow me, here!

Happy Weekend. Happy Brunching.

One of my favorite things about the weekend is that tiny excess of time I finally find myself with to wander into a cozy cafe or favorite local joint for a bite to eat with good friends. After a week of hustle and bustle, there's just something so refreshing about leisurely-paced meals spent fueling your mind & body with wholesome food and long conversation. And as every New Yorker knows, there truly is no better place or way to do so than over brunch.

Needless to say, when I stumbled across this incredible brunch round up by Alice over on her beautiful blog Lingered Upon, I just had to share. Don't these meals almost make you want to skip on ahead to Sunday just so you can start indulging? Oh sweet deliciousness.

So, my fellow New Yorkers, what's the verdict? What's your favorite go-to spot?

Wishing you & yours a wonderful weekend and Happy Brunching ahead.

Southern Comfort.

In this stage of my life-- where work, travel & transition have continued to take center stage-- it's amazing the wonders that the small details of a long weekend spent at home can do for the soul. The way the breeze seems to blow more sweetly when you're sipping wine on the deck of your favorite vineyard with a view of the gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains before you; the way that time spent apart simply disappears when you're sitting next to a best friend, bent over a table in the kind of laughter that leaves your stomach in stitches; the way those weekend days seem to linger extra long when afternoons are spent lazing on the back porch drinking mimosas & playing boardgames; and the way those familiar tastes of Easter-- Dad's roasted leg of lamb & Mom's sweet strawberry rhubarb crumble-- instantly bring you back to that feeling of being a 6-year old twirling across the backyard under the warmth of the sun's golden rays, wearing your Easter Sunday best.

It takes time to build a home: time to bring life to new traditions in a new place, and time to find the right people to share those traditions with. And while each day spent in this little neck of the Brooklyn woods brings me a bit closer to having that here, I'm not there quite yet. It is going to take time. And, I believe, it's meant to. And while I journey down that road of discovery, it's a bit of southern comfort knowing that Virginia will always be waiting for me.

xo

(p.s. While I was home, I managed to find some time to sneak on over to Tuckahoe Plantation for a bit. Not surprisingly, those beautiful spring blooms proved too hard to resist. Enjoy!)

Happy Weekend.

Oh Pinterest. If only my life were half as wonderfully quaint as the one you've allowed me to trick myself into believing I lead. Casually slicing figs for my mid-week charcuterie plates? Perfectly arranged bouquets of beautiful blooms in every corner of my abode? Upside-down braids on the reg? Yea. Right. But boy, that sure won't stop me from dreamin' of the day. (Swoon.)
